Google search homepage on a laptop screen, where AI Overviews appear above the results

More of our clients now ask the same question: how do we get our website cited in AI Overviews? It is a fair question. In late August Google confirmed that some AI Overviews can now expand into longer, AI Mode style answers, which means more questions are answered on the results page before anyone clicks.

The good news is that there is no secret technique. Google says the same fundamentals apply. Here is what that means in practice for a Phuket business, and which pages are worth the effort.

What does Google say it takes to appear in AI Overviews?

Google says there are no additional requirements. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal search, and the same SEO best practices apply. There is no special markup, no separate submission and no AI-only file that earns a place.

Google’s own guidance on AI features and your website is short and worth reading in full. It changes the question from how do we trick the system into why would Google choose our page over the ten others saying something similar.

If the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO is still unclear, our earlier guide on SEO vs AEO vs GEO explains how they fit together. This article is the practical part.

Which searches still send clicks?

Local and ready-to-buy searches, because the person searching still needs to book, call, visit or compare. Searches such as villa rental Bang Tao with private pool, dentist Phuket Town open Sunday or boat charter Chalong price still lead to clicks, calls and map directions.

General questions are different. What is the best time to visit Phuket or how far is Patong from the airport are increasingly answered on the page itself. That content is still worth writing, but judge it by whether you are cited and whether your brand becomes familiar, not only by clicks.

For most Phuket businesses the practical conclusion is simple: protect and strengthen the pages that serve buying searches, and write informational content that is good enough to be the source Google quotes.

What makes a page worth quoting?

A page gets quoted when it answers the question clearly, with specific facts that are hard to find elsewhere. Vague, generic copy is easy to replace with any other source, so it rarely earns the citation.

  • The answer comes first. Put the direct answer in the first one or two sentences under each heading, then the detail.
  • Specific facts. Price ranges, distances, opening hours, minimum stays and policies. Fifteen minutes from Phuket airport is quotable. Conveniently located is not.
  • First-hand evidence. Your own photos, your own data and named people with real experience. This is exactly what separates you from a generic travel site.
  • Consistent details everywhere. The same business name, address, phone number and hours on your website, Business Profile, Facebook and directories.
  • Kept up to date. Old prices and closed services damage trust with people and with search systems alike.

How should you structure a page for AI Overviews?

One topic per page, question-led headings, and the answer directly under each heading. That structure lets Google lift a passage as a complete answer without needing the rest of the page for context.

Use lists and tables where the content is naturally a list or a comparison. Add a questions section built from what customers actually ask in emails and WhatsApp messages, not from what you imagine they ask. A villa page that answers is the pool heated, how far is the beach on foot and is there a minimum stay in December is far more useful than one that only describes the view.

Structured data helps Google understand what a page is about, even though it does not guarantee inclusion. Mark up your business, your location and your products or rooms accurately. Rich results for FAQ markup are now limited to a small set of sites, but the questions and answers themselves still matter on the page.

Do reviews and your Google Business Profile affect AI answers?

For local searches, yes. Google’s AI answers about local businesses regularly draw on Business Profile information and review content, so a thin or neglected profile is a missed opportunity.

  • Complete every field. Primary and secondary categories, services, attributes, hours and a description written for people.
  • Ask for specific reviews. A review that says the pool villa in Rawai was spotless and the transfer was on time gives the system far more to work with than great stay.
  • Reply to reviews. Replies show that the business is active and add useful context of their own.

Google explains what each part of the profile does in its Business Profile help.

How do you know if you are being cited?

Partly through Search Console and partly by checking yourself. Search Console includes clicks and impressions from AI Overviews in your normal web search figures, but it does not separate them out, so the numbers alone will not tell you when you were cited.

A simple manual check works well. Keep a list of the twenty questions your customers ask most. Once a month, search each one in a private browser window and note whether your site is cited in the AI Overview, and whether it appears in the results below. Run the same questions through ChatGPT and Perplexity while you are at it.

Over a few months that list shows clearly which pages are earning citations and which need work, which is more useful than any single ranking report.

Where to start this week

Go through your inbox and WhatsApp and write down the ten questions customers ask most. Then check whether your website answers each one clearly in the first two sentences of a page. Every question without a clear answer is a page, or a section, you should write next.

If you would rather have it done properly, our SEO and GEO services cover exactly this work, from content to structured data, and our website design team can restructure pages so they are easier to quote. Request a free audit and we will check where you stand today.
